Scientific Method Crystal Structures


QUESTION

: What were are supposed to do in this project is to find out the difference between rocks and minerals.

MATERIALS

: We used these materials in the experiment:
    • 2 Spoons
    • 2 Popsicle Sticks
    • Paper Plate
    • Tape
    • Salt
    • 2 Paper Cups
    • Bowl
    • Boiled Water
    • Magnifying Glass

PROCEDURE

: This is how do do the experiment step by step.

1. First, boil water in the bowl.
2. Then, pour the boiled water inside the cupes (don't burn yourself!).
3. Next, pour a spoon of salt into each of the paper cups and stir with the
popsicle sticks until the salt dissolves.
4. Meanwhile, take each spoon and put them on each side of the paper plate.
5. Next, take the cups of boiled water and pour the water on each spoons (only fill the spoons 3/4 of the way).
6. Don't touch the spoons. Let them sit to dry and evaporate for a couple of days.
7. Lastly, make a hypothesis. What do you think will happen next? You may use a magnifying glass

Hypothesis

: We predict that the salty water will evaporate and the salt on the spoon will turn into crystals, and it become a mineral. A mineral has patterns and are put together in a certain way. A rock is just kind of squished together in an irregular way. Minerals have crystals, they are one substance, and they should usually be smooth. Rocks might not be shiny, different colored, and usually made with more than one substance.

Observations

: During our observation, we found that some crystals were shaped as triangles, squares, and even a couple of other shapes. We found out that all crystals had a pattern, even though they didn't really look like they had one.
